| Issuance and Recognition |
One plate (rear) is issued by the state of
Oklahoma as a special interest plate at an extra cost
to promote Indian heritage in general. It can be purchased by anyone, Indian and
non-Indian, registering a vehicle in the state.
The Northern Cherokee could not issue their own plates because they are not a recognized tribe. The only legal way to have plates was to have the state issue them as organizational plates. An organizational plate requires at least 100 applications by a certain deadline. The tribe could not come up with enough tribal members applying by the deadline so license plate collectors stepped in and ordered enough plates to put them over the minimum. |
